One thing that has been important for me in my business over the years is this idea of “concept.” I think it will probably help you as well
Just so we are on the same page, when I say “concept” I’m talking about:
“a plan or intention; a conception.”
Oftentimes these original concepts turn into unique selling propositions. But whenever I create anything new, whether that’s a new course, a podcast, an article…
…even down to this email…
…I always start with a concept. It doesn’t have to be complicated or anything like that…
…but I just want some basic idea of what I am doing. With this email?
I’ll tell you the concept at the end.
But let me give you another example. Because I think many things in life are best explained through example.
At the end of 2023 and on into the early part of 2024, I wanted to do a video podcast. But I needed a concept for it. What did I come up with?
Well, I decided I would use index cards.
I’d have 3 points on whatever topic I wanted to talk about.
And as I told my story and talked through my 3 points, I’d show the index cards.
That was the basic concept of the podcast.
I added on this idea of counting down from 100. So I started on Episode 100 and counted down to episode 1. That was a little gimmick I threw in there to be different.
But the basic concept for the podcast? Let’s use index cards to make points. 3 points an episode.
It was called Index Card Insights, and you can find it here.
I wonder if you can see how simple concepts can evolve into USPs?
Another example:
Later in the year I decided to do another video podcast.
The concept on this one would be a little different. I wanted to take advantage of something called “unused capacity.”
What’s that?
Well that is the idea that you aren’t using all of your resources. Like maybe you have some underutilized resources that you weren’t thinking about.
In my case, I was looking at time.
I wanted to start walking everyday. That was about a half an hour to 45 minutes a day to walk.
Well, I thought, why not just pull out my phone and record a video everyday while I was walking. Essentially, I’d be getting two things done at once.
I’d be getting my walk in, AND I’d be recording a whole freaking video podcast. Exciting.
Sidenote: I didn’t come up with this idea. I learned it from Ben Settle, who the way I understand it, learned it from Dan Kennedy.
This video podcast was called Thoughts on a Walk, and you can find that here.
So the concept of that show was simple. Let’s go for a walk and talk marketing. Whatever marketing subject was on my mind.
The goal was to get double the output for the energy I was putting in.
It was a pretty loose concept. But very little pressure and easy to create.
The result was 100 episodes in 100 days. Probably the easiest show I ever made.
But again, it all started with concept.
Both those shows exist on my YouTube channel. People often forget that I have a Youtube channel, but I do. And I like to put content over there, usually pretty regularly.
I’ve just been taking a few months off from YouTube, recently. However, I have plans for YouTube in 2025, so it's a great time to subscribe to the channel.
But I told you I’d give you the concept of this very email, didn’t I?
Well, this email was meant to remind you about my Youtube channel.
The concept of this email was to talk about “concept” and discuss the concepts of two of the shows I have on my youtube channel.
And in that way, give some value, and also raise awareness for something that I think is worthy of your attention.
So with that being said, let me shut up and get on with my day.
Hope you enjoy Index Card Insights and Thoughts on a Walk.
That’s all I got!
