Well, here are 5 questions I’ve been asked recently about email marketing. Some of them are better than others. I bring these five up for a reason though.
There is a point to make and a take away from each of them. So here goes:
One) Does email marketing still actually work in 2024?
I get asked this question more than you would think. Which I find to be pretty funny when they asked me about it by email. I mean, you are mailing me because you know I do email marketing. You are on my list because you want to hear what I have to say, and yet you are asking me if email marketing is still working. Oblivious to the fact that it is working on you.
The point? Pay attention to the details. Look past your questions to the obvious answers.
Two) How to start an email campaign?
There are many right answers to this question. And listen, it’s a good question. The short answer is to begin with impact. I often envision the email campaign to be a court case, and you are building your case. Each email presents more and more evidence why the jury (your email list) should buy this product you are talking about.
But beyond the short answer, and to get a little more practical, I guess more often than not, I like to begin with a story that is completely related to my offer.
Then I meander around to the product I want to talk about for a soft pitch. That is how I often begin email campaigns. But that is 100% personal preference. I don’t know that there is a wrong way to start, except maybe to not start.
Well…I take that back. Being boring is probably a bad way to start. Getting tuned out is never good for sales.
Three) Is email marketing easy to learn?
As easy as falling in love. And for further instructions I’ll refer to U2’s “The Sweetest Thing”
“My love she throws me like a rubber ball
Oh oh oh, the sweetest thing
She won't catch me or break my fall
Oh oh oh, the sweetest thing
Baby's got blue skies up ahead
But in this I'm a rain cloud
You know she likes a dry kind of love
Oh oh oh, the sweetest thing”
So in other words…yeah just listen to the song. It’s easy and it’s hard.
Four) Realistically what will it cost me to get into email marketing?
Time and commitment. There are always free alternatives online.
Five) Are email marketers in demand?
Always. Right now, email marketers are trying to be made redundant with A.I. in many companies, to varying degrees of success and failure. But listen…
There are a few things this world never gets tired of (I have learned over the years:)
A butt wiper
A problem solver
A good story teller.
Not to be crass, but just to be real. So in light of that truth, I would say yes, people will always be interested in email marketers who know how to create genuine impact.
